Kadant Shares Dip After Naming Michael Colwell as Successor to CEO Jeffrey Powell

Shares of Kadant Inc. (NYSE:KAI) declined modestly in after-hours trading Thursday after the industrial supplier announced a long-term succession plan for its chief executive officer. The company named veteran executive Michael Colwell to succeed current CEO Jeffrey Powell, who will transition to the role of Executive Chairman.
A Phased Leadership Handover
Kadant outlined a multi-stage transition designed to ensure continuity. The company announced that the handover will proceed according to the following timeline:
- October 1, 2026: Michael Colwell will first be appointed President and Chief Operating Officer.
- January 2, 2027: Colwell will then assume the full roles of President, CEO, and Director.
- January 2, 2027: On the same day, Jeffrey Powell will step down as CEO and become Executive Chairman of the Board.
The plan also involves the retirement of Jonathan Painter, Kadant’s current Chairman of the Board, effective January 2, 2027. Powell is expected to remain as chairman in a non-executive capacity after his retirement on January 1, 2028.
Incoming and Outgoing Executive Roles
AdMichael Colwell is a long-serving Kadant executive, having been with the company since its acquisition of Carmanah Design and Manufacturing Inc. in November 2013, where he was President and CEO. At Kadant, he has served as Senior Vice President since December 2024 and currently leads the company’s Industrial Processing segment.
As Executive Chairman, Powell will remain actively involved for one year after the CEO transition. His responsibilities will include strategic planning, acquisition activities, and consulting with management on operational matters. This structure is intended to provide a stable handover period.
Market Reaction
Following the announcement, Kadant shares fell 1% in after-hours trading on Thursday, according to Investing.com. A minor stock price movement is not uncommon following news of a CEO change, as markets adjust to new leadership, even in a well-telegraphed internal succession. The planned one-year overlap with the outgoing CEO in an executive role is a corporate governance strategy aimed at mitigating uncertainty and ensuring a smooth transition for the business and its investors.
