JPMorgan's Dimon Warns Anthropic's Mythos AI Poses 'Ballistic Missile' Risk

Summary
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon characterized the risks from Anthropic's advanced Mythos AI model as a 'real issue,' comparing uncontrolled access to 'giving ballistic missiles to individuals' amid heightened national security concerns.
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon issued a stark warning on Wednesday regarding the potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence, stating that the risks associated with Anthropic's Mythos AI model are a "real issue." Speaking at Senator Dave McCormick’s Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit, Dimon emphasized the need for strict controls over such powerful technology.
'Ballistic Missiles for Individuals'
Dimon drew a dramatic comparison to underscore his concerns, stating that unrestricted access to the model's capabilities is equivalent to "giving ballistic missiles to individuals with Mythos." He added that the U.S. government is actively addressing the threat, highlighting the gravity with which top officials view the potential for misuse of advanced AI.
JPMorgan was among a select group of clients granted early access to Anthropic's Mythos model when it was released in April. The model is highly regarded by financial institutions for its advanced ability to identify and help remediate cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
AdA History of National Security Concerns
Dimon's comments come just a month after the U.S. government took direct action over the technology. In June, Washington ordered Anthropic to restrict access to its most powerful AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, for all foreign nationals due to national security fears. This prompted the company to temporarily cut off worldwide access.
According to reports from Reuters, those restrictions were later lifted after Anthropic implemented new, unspecified safeguards. The incident reflects a broader struggle among governments and technology firms to balance innovation with safety, particularly amid fears that advanced AI could be exploited by the military or intelligence agencies of nations like China and Russia. Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Dimon's remarks.
