Background

JetBlue Airways on Thursday raised its fuel cost estimate for the third quarter, citing elevated global energy prices, while simultaneously boosting its revenue forecast on the back of strong travel demand. The mixed update sent the carrier's shares down approximately 1% in premarket trading.

Rising Costs and Operational Headwinds

The airline now expects to pay $3.96 per gallon for fuel in the third quarter, a significant increase from its previous forecast of $3.49, according to a statement reported by Reuters. JetBlue attributed the higher prices to geopolitical tensions, specifically citing the impact of the ongoing war in Iran on the global oil market.

In addition to fuel pressures, the company noted that its operations were challenged by weather and air traffic control disruptions during July and August, particularly in the Northeastern U.S. These issues led to an increase in flight cancellations and pushed operating costs higher for the period.

Strong Demand Bolsters Revenue

Despite the cost pressures, JetBlue reported that strong booking trends have continued into September for both peak and off-peak travel times. This sustained consumer demand has enabled the airline to implement higher ticket pricing.

As a result, the carrier upgraded its outlook for a key industry metric, revenue per available seat mile (RASM). JetBlue now projects RASM to increase between 17% and 20% in the third quarter, up from its prior guidance of a 12.5% to 16.5% rise. This suggests that robust passenger revenue is currently offsetting some of the impact from higher operational expenses.
