James Fisher H1 Revenue Rises on Defence Strength, Offsetting Energy Weakness

UK marine services provider James Fisher and Sons plc (LSE:FSJ) reported a 2.1% year-over-year increase in first-half revenue to £195.9 million, driven by robust growth in its Defence and Maritime Transport businesses. The strong performance in these divisions helped offset significant headwinds in its Energy segment, allowing the company to reaffirm its full-year outlook for 2026.
Performance by Division
The company's results showed a clear divergence between its operating segments. The Defence division saw strong demand across all its product lines, particularly for Tactical Delivery Vehicles and Submarine Platforms, which fueled revenue and profit growth.
Similarly, the Maritime Transport division benefited from high fleet utilization and favorable spot market rates. James Fisher also cited strong ship-to-ship transfer activity in Latin America as a key contributor. In contrast, the Energy division's revenue declined by 20.6%, weighed down by subdued demand, project delays, and geopolitical uncertainty. A partial offset came from growth in the renewables sector.
Financial Highlights
Profitability improved significantly despite the mixed revenue picture. According to the company's report, underlying operating profit for the first half rose 27.9%, leading to a 140 basis point expansion in the underlying operating margin.
AdKey figures from the first-half report include:
- Adjusted Operating Profit: £14.2 million
- Operating Profit: £10.3 million
- Pretax Profit: £2.4 million
Outlook and Context
Looking ahead, James Fisher's board stated it expects the positive momentum in its Defence and Maritime Transport divisions to continue through the second half of 2026. However, it anticipates that market activity in the Energy segment will remain challenging for the rest of the year due to ongoing geopolitical and macroeconomic factors.
Despite the difficulties in the energy market, the company maintained its overall expectations for the full year, signaling that the stronger-than-expected performance in other divisions is sufficient to keep it on track with its annual forecast.
