Italian Stocks Edge Lower as Energy and Financials Weigh

Italian equities finished Friday's trading session in negative territory, as losses in key sectors overshadowed broader market gains. The benchmark Investing.com Italy 40 index fell 0.29% by the close in Milan, according to data from Investing.com.
Session in Review
The decline was largely driven by several of the index's major constituents. Energy, healthcare, and financial stocks were the primary laggards for the session.
Key individual stock movements included:
- Top Performers: Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY) led the gainers, climbing 2.05%. It was followed by STMicroelectronics (BIT:STMMI) with a 1.85% increase and automaker Stellantis NV (BIT:STLAM), which rose 1.80%.
- Worst Performers: Energy giant Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) was the session's biggest decliner, falling 3.29%. DiaSorin SpA (BIT:DIAS) dropped 1.82%, and luxury brand Brunello Cucinelli (BIT:BCU) shed 1.70%.
Market Breadth and Sector Performance
AdDespite the benchmark index's decline, market breadth on the Milan Stock Exchange was positive. Data showed that 351 stocks advanced compared to 333 that declined, with 57 ending the session unchanged. This suggests that the day's losses were concentrated in larger-capitalization companies that have a greater weighting in the index, such as Eni.
The underperformance of the Oil & Gas sector was a significant factor, reflected in Eni's steep drop. This move came as commodity markets showed mixed signals, with U.S. crude oil futures falling while Brent crude remained flat.
Broader Market Context
In the commodities market, Crude Oil futures for October delivery were down 0.45% to $90.89 a barrel. Gold futures also saw downward pressure, with the December contract falling 1.25% to $4,483.09 a troy ounce.
Currency markets were relatively quiet. The EUR/USD pair was nearly unchanged, while the U.S. Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, ticked higher by 0.19%.
