Indian Equities End Lower as Consumer and Capital Goods Sectors Drag

Summary
India's benchmark stock indices, the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex, closed Tuesday's session in negative territory, weighed down by losses in key sectors including consumer goods and capital goods.
Indian benchmark equity indices closed lower on Tuesday, snapping a winning streak as selling pressure in the capital goods, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and healthcare sectors weighed on investor sentiment.
The Nifty 50 index finished the session down 0.36%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index recorded a decline of 0.44%.
Market Performance
The downturn was driven by broad-based selling in several key industries. Market breadth on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was negative, with 1,331 stocks declining compared to 1,277 advancing issues.
Despite the decline in the headline indices, a key measure of market volatility, the India VIX, fell 2.36% to 10.98. A lower VIX reading generally suggests a decrease in investor fear or expectations of near-term market swings.
Sector and Stock Movers
Certain stocks bucked the negative trend, with state-run Coal India Ltd. (NSE:COAL) emerging as the top performer on the Nifty 50, surging 3.13%. Other notable gainers included Titan Company Ltd. (NSE:TITN), which rose 1.52%.
AdOn the downside, FMCG and retail stocks faced significant pressure:
- Trent Ltd. (NSE:TREN) was the session's worst performer on the Nifty, falling 1.72%.
- Nestle India Ltd. (NSE:NEST) declined 1.36%.
- Tata Consumer Products Ltd. (NSE:TACN) was down 1.24%.
On the BSE Sensex, financial services firms Bajaj Finserv and Bajaj Finance were among the top laggards, losing 1.62% and 1.46% respectively.
Broader Market Context
In the commodities market, crude oil prices saw a sharp decline. The November contract for Brent crude fell 2.12% to trade at $98.21 a barrel, while WTI Crude dropped 2.72%. Gold futures for December delivery also edged lower by 0.39%.
Meanwhile, the Indian Rupee strengthened against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/INR pair trading down 0.27% at 95.58.
