India Opens Applications for Remaining Duty-Free Raw Sugar Import Quota

Summary
India's government is now accepting applications for the final 202,550 tonnes of its 1 million-tonne duty-free raw sugar import allowance, a move to secure supply ahead of the high-demand festival season.
India's government on Tuesday opened applications for the remaining 202,550 tonnes of its duty-free raw sugar import quota, the final tranche of a larger program designed to bolster domestic supplies. The move was announced by the country's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
Quota Details
The current application window is for the balance of a 1 million-tonne duty-free import plan approved by the government last month. According to the DGFT, applications for a total of 797,450 tonnes were received and allocated in an earlier round.
Eligible sugar mills and refiners are now invited to apply for the remaining portion of the quota. The imports under this program must be completed by October 31.
AdMarket Context
New Delhi's decision to allow tariff-free sugar imports is timed to precede India's traditional festival season. This period typically sees a significant surge in sugar consumption due to heightened demand for traditional sweets and confections.
By increasing the available supply, the import program aims to ensure price stability and meet the anticipated rise in consumer demand. The measure is a proactive step to manage the domestic market balance during a peak consumption period.
