Background

Shares of life sciences company Illumina skyrocketed in Tuesday trading, while cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike also posted solid gains in a session marked by significant divergence across different market capitalizations.

Large-Caps See Extreme Moves

Illumina (ILMN) was the standout performer among large-cap stocks, with its shares soaring an extraordinary 80.18% by the close of trading, according to data from Investing.com. The technology sector also saw pockets of significant strength, with semiconductor firm Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) climbing 13.12%.

However, the gains were not universal in this segment. On the downside, shares of public safety technology company Axon (AXON) fell sharply, ending the day down 8.98%.

Divergence Among Market Giants

Mega-cap stocks, those with market capitalizations over $200 billion, displayed a mixed performance. Cybersecurity leader Crowdstrike Holdings (CRWD) advanced 3.3%, and energy major Exxon Mobil (XOM) gained 2.7%.

Weakness was evident in other major sectors, indicating a lack of broad conviction among investors. Key decliners included:

  • Goldman Sachs Group (GS): -2.88%
  • General Electric (GE): -2.76%
  • Netflix (NFLX): -2.5%

Earnings Drive Mid and Small-Cap Movers

Company-specific news appeared to be a primary driver for volatility in smaller-cap stocks. Mid-cap Forgent Power Solutions (FPS) jumped 11.94% after the company reported an earnings beat and issued strong forward-looking guidance.

In the small-cap space, Radiant Logistics (RLGT) surged 21.01% on the back of strong fourth-quarter results. Conversely, other stocks in these segments faced heavy selling pressure, with Alignment Healthcare (ALHC) plummeting 20.44% and Stewards (SWRD) plunging 30.22%.
