Background

Shares of Iberdrola (IBE) declined on Wednesday after the Spanish energy company's first-half results, which showed a significant profit increase, were overshadowed by a large one-time gain and the announcement of a major acquisition.

The stock fell as much as 1.2% in morning trade, even as the company posted a headline net profit of €4.336 billion for the first six months of 2026, a year-over-year increase of 21.7%.

Earnings Quality in Focus

Investors looked past the headline profit figure to the underlying performance. The majority of the earnings growth stemmed from a one-off net capital gain of approximately €953 million from the divestiture of its business in Mexico, according to the company's report.

When excluding this and other extraordinary items, Iberdrola's adjusted net profit was €3.565 billion, representing a more modest 7.8% increase. While the company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance for adjusted net profit growth of more than 8%, the first-half result was broadly in line with analyst expectations, offering little positive catalyst for the stock.

Caruna Acquisition and Market Backdrop

Concurrent with its earnings, Iberdrola announced the acquisition of Caruna, Finland’s largest electricity distributor, in a deal valued at €5 billion. The large, debt-funded nature of the transaction added to investor caution.

This combination of factors created a "sell the news" environment for the stock, which was trading near its 52-week high of €21.89. Broader market sentiment was also subdued as investors positioned themselves ahead of the European Central Bank’s upcoming policy meeting. The consensus 12-month analyst price target for Iberdrola stood at €20.47, below recent trading levels, suggesting limited perceived upside.
