HubSpot Downgraded by Wells Fargo on Near-Term AI Transition Risks

Wells Fargo has downgraded HubSpot (HUBS) to Equal Weight from Overweight and slashed its price target to $225 from $300, arguing that the software company's broad transition to artificial intelligence creates near-term uncertainty for investors.
The Analyst's Rationale
In a note to clients, Wells Fargo stated that while HubSpot's strategic initiatives around AI are the right long-term decisions, they complicate the company's immediate financial outlook. The firm highlighted several ongoing changes, including new AI pricing models, a revised go-to-market strategy, and updated product positioning.
According to the brokerage, these shifts create a more balanced risk-reward profile for the stock at its current valuation. The downgrade reflects a preference to wait for clearer evidence of improving financial performance and successful AI monetization before taking a more constructive stance.
Near-Term Headwinds
Wells Fargo warned of specific challenges ahead of HubSpot's second-quarter results. The firm noted that go-to-market retraining in April could have weighed on new annual recurring revenue growth. It also pointed to tougher year-over-year comparisons in the second half of the year, which could limit the size of any potential increase to full-year guidance.
AdThe note also observed a broader market trend where customers are currently prioritizing spending on AI infrastructure and developer tools over CRM software upgrades. Because HubSpot's business remains largely seat-based, the financial contribution from new AI products is expected to be limited until adoption becomes more widespread.
Path to an Upgrade
Wells Fargo outlined specific milestones that could lead to a more positive view on the stock. The firm is looking for evidence of:
- Accelerating adoption of HubSpot's Breeze AI agents.
- Stronger attach rates for AI products across its customer base.
- Clear signs that AI is generating meaningful incremental demand and revenue.
