HSBC Taps Cantor Fitzgerald's Paras Jain as Global TMT Head, Sources Say

Summary
HSBC has hired veteran investment banker Paras Jain from Cantor Fitzgerald to be its global head of technology, media, and telecommunications, as the bank aims to expand its financing for the AI sector.
HSBC is hiring seasoned investment banker Paras Jain from Cantor Fitzgerald to serve as its global head of technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT), according to people familiar with the matter. The appointment signals a strategic push by the London-headquartered bank to deepen its presence in high-growth technology sectors.
Key Appointment Details
Jain is expected to join HSBC in November and will be based in New York, the sources said. He will report to Jan Laubjerg, the bank's global head of sectors coverage.
During his approximately six years at Cantor Fitzgerald, Jain was instrumental in building its technology investment banking group. His prior experience includes technology-focused banking roles at Macquarie Group and Morgan Stanley. Both HSBC and Cantor Fitzgerald declined to comment on the move, according to Reuters.
Strategic Focus on AI and Financing
The hire is part of HSBC's strategy to leverage its formidable $3.4 trillion balance sheet to capture a larger share of the financing market, particularly around the buildout of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The bank is aiming to expand its M&A and capital markets footprint in the TMT sectors across Asia and the Middle East, while also focusing on financing opportunities in the United States.
AdThis strategy aligns with significant capital expenditure in the sector. According to Goldman Sachs, five major AI hyperscalers are projected to spend:
- Just over $800 billion in the current year.
- An estimated $1.1 trillion next year.
Shift in Investment Banking Strategy
Jain's appointment comes after HSBC announced in 2025 that it would restructure its investment banking operations, winding down most of its M&A advisory and equity capital markets (ECM) businesses in the U.S., Britain, and Europe. The bank stated it was shifting toward a more financing-led model.
This approach concentrates on areas where the bank has greater scale and competitive strength, such as debt capital markets, leveraged finance, and infrastructure finance. Hiring a senior TMT banker suggests a targeted effort to rebuild and invest in specific high-potential sectors within this new strategic framework.
