Hong Kong Exports Surge 53% in August on Strong Electronics Demand

Hong Kong's external trade activity accelerated sharply in August, with the value of total merchandise exports soaring by 53.0% from a year earlier, according to data released Thursday by the city's Census and Statistics Department. The surge, which follows a 50.7% gain in July, was fueled by robust global demand for technology products.
Trade Figures Show Sustained Momentum
The government report detailed significant year-on-year growth in both exports and imports for August 2026, indicating continued strength in the region's trade flows.
- Total Exports: Rose to HK$667.9 billion, a 53.0% increase compared to August 2025.
- Total Imports: Climbed to HK$739.1 billion, a 60.0% increase from the previous year.
- Trade Deficit: The visible trade deficit for the month was HK$71.2 billion, equivalent to 9.6% of the value of imports.
For the first eight months of 2026, total exports increased by 42.5% and imports grew by 43.2% compared to the same period in 2025. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the value of exports in the three months ending in August rose 9.1% over the preceding three-month period.
Electronics and Asian Markets Drive Surge
AdThe expansion was broad-based but particularly pronounced in technology-related goods and trade with Asian partners. Exports of "electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof" jumped by 62.6%, or HK$135.7 billion. Shipments of "office machines and automatic data processing machines" recorded a remarkable 131.0% increase, rising by HK$60.2 billion.
Geographically, exports to Asia as a whole grew by 59.2%. Key destinations showing major increases included:
- Malaysia (+101.7%)
- Vietnam (+83.3%)
- Singapore (+80.8%)
- Mainland China (+61.2%)
Beyond Asia, exports to the United States and Mexico also posted strong gains, rising 64.2% and 68.8% respectively. The data underscores Hong Kong's pivotal role as a re-export hub, particularly for electronics moving between mainland China and global markets.
