Herbalife Stock Climbs on $250 Million Share Repurchase Authorization

Herbalife Nutrition Ltd. (NYSE: HLF) stock climbed 1.4% in Tuesday morning trading, bucking a broader market downturn after the company announced a significant share repurchase plan.
New Capital Return Program
In a statement released Monday, September 7, 2026, Herbalife's Board of Directors authorized a new stock buyback program for up to $250 million over the next three years. The company stated that repurchases could be made through various methods, including open market purchases, privately negotiated transactions, or accelerated share repurchase agreements.
Share buybacks are a common way for companies to return capital to shareholders, as they can increase earnings per share by reducing the number of outstanding shares.
A Sign of Management Confidence
The announcement was viewed by investors as a sign of management's confidence in the company's financial stability and future prospects. It suggests leadership believes the current stock price is an attractive point for capital deployment. The stock has been trading near its 52-week low of $7.56, making the buyback appear particularly opportunistic.
AdCFO John DeSimone reinforced this outlook, stating: "We believe our strong financial profile and free cash flow generation provide us with significant flexibility to invest in the business, maintain a strong balance sheet and return capital to shareholders." The news also comes after the company disclosed in late August that Michael Gratziani would be stepping down as CEO.
Bucking a Weaker Market
Herbalife's stock-specific catalyst allowed it to outperform the wider U.S. equity market, which experienced a risk-off tone on Tuesday. For comparison, major indices were trading lower during the session:
- The S&P 500 was down approximately 0.5%
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average was off by 1.2%
- The Nasdaq Composite also traded lower by 0.5%
Despite this headwind, the shareholder-friendly buyback announcement provided a clear reason for investors to support Herbalife's shares.
