Hemnet Shares Plunge 15% After Pausing Share Buyback Program

Shares of Swedish property platform Hemnet plummeted 15% on Thursday after the company's board announced it would pause its ongoing share buyback program. The company attributed the decision to a need to maintain financial flexibility while it navigates a period of strategic change.
Capital Allocation Shift
Hemnet's board decided to halt its share repurchase plan, effective September 14, to preserve "full financial flexibility during a transformative phase," the company stated. According to the announcement, Hemnet has launched several new strategic initiatives in 2026 to adapt to changing market conditions and solidify its market-leading position.
The suspension of a buyback program can negatively affect investor sentiment, as it removes a key mechanism for returning capital to shareholders and a source of demand for the company's stock. The move suggests management may be prioritizing cash preservation or redirecting capital towards internal investments or potential acquisitions.
Buyback Program Details
AdThe now-paused program was initially approved for up to 600 million Swedish crowns and began on May 8, 2026. The company provided the following details on its progress to date:
- Total repurchased: 2,102,950 shares as of September 4.
- Total cost: Approximately 189.3 million Swedish crowns.
- Current holdings: Hemnet now holds 3,064,110 of its own shares in treasury.
Hemnet stated it would issue a separate announcement if and when the board decides to resume the buyback program.
