Background

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index futures for September delivery gained in overnight trading on Friday, closing at a notable premium to the underlying cash index. The move suggests positive sentiment among traders heading into the next market session.

Futures Performance

According to data from Zhitong Finance APP, the September futures contract settled at 24,667, an increase of 95 points, or 0.39%. This closing price represented a 63-point premium over the last close of the spot Hang Seng Index.

A premium in futures contracts typically indicates that investors anticipate the underlying index will open higher. It reflects a willingness to pay more for the future delivery of the index's components than their current market value.

The decline in total open interest can suggest that some traders were closing out existing positions, while the modest rise in net open interest points to a small build-up in new directional bets.
