Groupon to Open Platform to Third-Party Developers and AI Agents

Summary
The company announced it will allow external developers and AI agents to build new applications using its inventory of deals, a move aimed at expanding its reach as part of an "AI-first" strategy.
Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN) is opening its platform to third-party developers and artificial intelligence agents, allowing them to build new products and services using the company's extensive inventory of local deals. The strategic shift was announced by CEO Dušan Šenkypl in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.
A New Developer-Focused Strategy
According to Šenkypl, the initiative will enable students, independent developers, and community organizers to create their own applications on top of Groupon's infrastructure. Under the new model, Groupon will provide the deals and handle the checkout process, while external builders can focus on creating curated experiences for specific audiences.
This move represents a significant evolution of Groupon's business model, transforming it from a closed marketplace into an open platform. The goal is to leverage the creativity of the wider tech community to find new ways for consumers to discover and engage with local businesses.
AI Integration and Use Cases
AdThe company is encouraging developers to connect their own AI agents to the platform, building on Groupon's existing integrations with large language models like ChatGPT and Claude. Šenkypl outlined several potential applications for the new platform access:
- Websites that curate specific deals, such as family activities or wellness packages.
- Neighborhood clubs that help members discover and support nearby businesses.
- Community projects that use earned commissions to fund local charities.
- Personalized AI agents that find experiences tailored to a user's specific interests and budget.
To facilitate this, Groupon plans to release an AI Builder Pack for public access in October. This initiative is a core component of what the company describes as its "AI-first mission" to expand the ways people and automated agents can utilize its marketplace.
