Goldman Sachs Lawyer Kathryn Ruemmler to Testify Before Congress on Epstein Ties

Summary
Kathryn Ruemmler, a senior counsel at Goldman Sachs, is scheduled to appear before a House committee to answer questions about her past communications and relationship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Goldman Sachs senior counsel Kathryn Ruemmler is set to face questioning from U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday regarding her connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The testimony places the investment bank back under scrutiny over its handling of the controversy surrounding one of its top executives.
The Congressional Probe
Ruemmler will appear before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform as part of its broader investigation into Epstein's network of connections with prominent figures in business, finance, and politics. The hearing aims to probe the extent of these relationships and has previously involved interviews with individuals such as former President Bill Clinton and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, according to the committee.
The inquiry has renewed focus on Goldman Sachs' decision to retain Ruemmler after details of her association with Epstein became public. According to a Reuters report, Goldman Sachs declined to comment on the upcoming hearing, and Ruemmler did not respond to a request for comment.
Details of the Connection
Documents previously released by the U.S. Justice Department revealed that Ruemmler had extensive contact with Epstein. The key findings from these documents include:
Ad- A large number of communications between Ruemmler and Epstein from 2014 to 2019.
- These interactions occurred after Epstein's 2008 guilty plea in Florida for procuring a minor for prostitution.
- The documents also indicated that Ruemmler accepted gifts from Epstein and advised him on handling media inquiries about his crimes.
A spokesperson for Ruemmler has previously stated that she did nothing wrong and was unaware of any ongoing criminal activity by Epstein during her interactions with him as a practicing criminal defense attorney.
Ruemmler's Status at Goldman Sachs
Ruemmler stepped down from her roles as chief legal officer and general counsel at Goldman Sachs at the end of June. However, she has remained with the firm in an advisory capacity as senior counsel pending the appointment of her successor.
In a June interview with CNBC, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon explained that Ruemmler felt the press coverage of her past work made it "hard for her to execute on her job and her responsibilities, and she just thought it was time to step away." The decision to keep her in an advisory role has drawn criticism from some lawmakers.
