Background

Goldman Sachs' asset management arm announced Tuesday it has raised $11.7 billion across its latest private equity funds and associated vehicles. The successful capital raise highlights continued investor demand for alternative assets managed by established players, even amid a complex market environment.

Fundraising Details

In a statement, the firm's alternatives unit detailed the composition of the new capital. The majority of the funds were allocated to its flagship buyout strategy, with additional capital earmarked for an Asia-focused fund and co-investments.

  • West Street Capital Partners IX: The flagship fund, which is the ninth vintage in the series, secured $9.6 billion.
  • West Street Asia Equity Partners I: A dedicated pan-Asia strategy raised $1.6 billion.
  • Co-investment Vehicles: An additional $500 million was raised for related co-investments.

The capital for the flagship fund was sourced from a global mix of institutional and high-net-worth investors, with Goldman Sachs and its employees also making significant commitments, according to the firm.

Michael Bruun, global co-head of private equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, told Reuters that the firm targets companies with enterprise values ranging from $500 million to approximately $2 billion or $3 billion. He stated that the investment horizon is typically four to five years, with a focus on value creation to facilitate an exit within that timeframe.

Over one-third of the capital from the new flagship fund has already been deployed. Notable investments include the U.S. cybersecurity audit firm Schellman, European medical device maker Numantec, and sports agency Excel Sports Management.

Context and Strategic Goals

This fundraising effort is part of a broader strategic push by Goldman Sachs to expand its alternatives business. As of June 30, Goldman Sachs Alternatives had $459 billion in assets under supervision.

The firm has set a long-term goal to grow its alternatives assets under supervision to $750 billion by the end of 2030, making private equity a critical component of its growth strategy.
