Gold-to-Platinum Ratio Widens as Monetary and Industrial Drivers Diverge

Summary

The gold-to-platinum ratio climbed as gold benefited from Federal Reserve rate-hike pause expectations and safe-haven demand, while platinum faced pressure from industrial demand concerns and profit-taking.

Background

The gold-to-platinum ratio (XAU/XPT) rose sharply during Tuesday's trading, highlighting a growing performance gap between the two precious metals. The divergence is being fueled by a mix of macroeconomic sentiment favoring gold and industrial-specific headwinds weighing on platinum.

Gold Strengthens on Fed Outlook and Risk Aversion

Gold prices advanced for a third consecutive session, supported by growing market expectations that the Federal Reserve will hold interest rates steady at its upcoming September meeting. This outlook lowers the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion.

Investor caution also played a role, with market participants awaiting the release of the latest Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes and the Federal Reserve Chair's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium for further monetary policy cues. A broader risk-off sentiment in equity markets, which saw the S&P 500 fall 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite decline 1.3%, further bolstered gold's appeal as a safe-haven asset. A weaker U.S. dollar hovering near multi-month lows provided additional support for the dollar-denominated metal.

Platinum Pressured by Industrial Concerns

In contrast, platinum came under pressure as short-term traders took profits following a multi-week rally, particularly as the metal approached key technical resistance levels. The selling was exacerbated by persistent concerns over weakening automotive demand.

Longer-term, the accelerating shift toward electric vehicles (EVs) continues to cloud the outlook for platinum demand, as EVs do not require the platinum-based catalytic converters used in internal combustion engines. However, providing some price support, the World Platinum Investment Council has previously forecast a continuing structural supply deficit for the metal.

Market Metrics Highlight Divergence

The diverging forces pushed the XAU/XPT ratio up 1.3% to 2.5264, reaching an intraday high of 2.5308 from an opening level of 2.4936, according to data from Investing.com. In Tuesday's session, gold's monetary and safe-haven characteristics clearly overshadowed platinum's industrial profile, a dynamic that is dictating the relative performance of the two metals.
