Background

Weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere created a mixed operating environment for the global construction sector during the third quarter, with September trends continuing patterns seen throughout the period, according to a new monthly analysis by Jefferies.

Such meteorological data is closely watched by investors as it can directly influence the pace of construction projects, demand for materials, and the performance of companies specializing in repairs and remediation.

Drier Conditions Dominate in Europe

Europe largely experienced drier-than-average weather, which is generally favorable for construction activity. The Jefferies report noted that France, Germany, Spain, and Italy all recorded fewer days of extreme precipitation in Q3 compared to the prior year. The United Kingdom also saw another drier-than-average month in September.

However, there were exceptions, with Poland and Finland experiencing more severe rainy days than average. The report also highlighted that construction in Spain and France faced disruptions from wildfires and significant heatwaves during July and August.

Varied U.S. Weather and Extended Hail Season

In the United States, third-quarter rainfall was slightly lower than last year, but conditions varied significantly by region. States along the northern Mississippi River were wetter than usual, while southern areas were moderately drier. The Northeast saw mixed results, with New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut recording above-average precipitation.

Notably, the U.S. hail season was more active and lasted longer than usual. Jefferies found that cumulative hail storms through September were 4% above last year's levels, a significant increase from the previous year's weaker season. This could signal higher demand for roofing and exterior repair services.

Trends in Asia and Latin America

Elsewhere, the report found divergent trends. Latin America was generally less wet than average, though Brazil saw a large increase in severe rainfall compared to last year.

In the Asia-Pacific region, weather was also mixed. Australia and China recorded fewer severe rainy days during the third quarter, while Japan and India experienced a moderate increase in extreme precipitation events.
