German DAX Falls to 1-Month Low as Tech and Construction Stocks Slide

Summary
Germany's benchmark DAX index declined 0.69% on Thursday to close at a new one-month low, pressured by significant losses in the technology, construction, and software sectors. The sell-off coincided with a sharp rise in market volatility.
German equities finished lower on Thursday, with the benchmark DAX index falling 0.69% to reach its lowest point in a month. The decline was driven by broad weakness in cyclical sectors, reflecting growing investor caution.
Sector-Wide Weakness
The sell-off was led by losses in the Construction, Technology, and Software industries, according to market data from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The negative sentiment was widespread, with falling stocks outnumbering advancers by a margin of 448 to 233, while 62 stocks ended the session unchanged.
Among the DAX's biggest decliners were:
- Vonovia SE (ETR:VNAn), which fell 3.03% to a new three-year low.
- Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR1n), dropping 2.98%.
- Zalando SE (ETR:ZALG), which decreased by 2.92%.
Other major German indices also posted losses. The MDAX index, which tracks mid-cap companies, declined 1.40%, while the technology-focused TecDAX index fell 1.27%.
Volatility Spikes Amid Market Jitters
AdInvestor uncertainty was evident in the bond and derivatives markets. The DAX volatility index (V1XI), a key measure of expected market turbulence based on options prices, surged 12.30% to 18.41, also marking a new one-month high.
Despite the broad downturn, a few blue-chip stocks bucked the trend. The session's top performers on the DAX included exchange operator Deutsche Boerse AG (ETR:DB1Gn), which rose 2.19%, and automotive parts supplier Continental AG (ETR:CONG), which gained 1.46%.
Broader Market Movements
In the commodities markets, energy prices saw a significant rally. Crude oil futures for October delivery climbed over 5.6% to trade around $101.46 a barrel. In contrast, Gold Futures for December delivery fell more than 1%.
Currency markets were relatively stable, with the EUR/USD pair showing minimal change. The US Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, edged higher by 0.13%.
