German DAX Falls 1.6% to One-Month Low as Automakers Slump

Summary
Germany's benchmark DAX index fell 1.63% on Friday to its lowest point in a month, with significant losses in major automakers like Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz leading the broad-based decline.
German stocks closed sharply lower on Friday, with the benchmark DAX index falling 1.63% to reach a new one-month low. The sell-off was driven by significant losses in the telecommunications, construction, and software sectors, with heavyweight automakers among the session's worst performers.
Broad Market Decline
At the close in Frankfurt, the DAX's decline marked its weakest finish in a month, according to market data. The negative sentiment extended to other German indices, as the MDAX index of mid-cap companies fell 0.96% and the technology-focused TecDAX index lost 1.07%.
Market breadth on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange was decidedly negative, reflecting the widespread selling pressure. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 484 to 186, while 72 stocks ended the session unchanged.
Automakers and Tech Under Pressure
Germany's powerful automotive sector bore the brunt of Friday's losses, weighing heavily on the main index. Key decliners included:
Ad- Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p), which plunged 5.58%.
- Porsche Automobil Holding SE (PSHG_p), which fell 4.85%.
- Mercedes Benz Group AG (MBGn), which was down 4.76%.
In contrast, semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies AG (IFXGn) was a notable outperformer, rising 2.68% against the market trend. On the TecDAX, losses were led by major players like Deutsche Telekom AG (-4.20%) and SAP SE (-2.60%).
Volatility and Commodities Context
Despite the sharp equity decline, the DAX volatility index (VDAX-NEW), a key measure of implied volatility in DAX options, decreased by 4.84% to 18.97. In commodities, crude oil and gold futures both registered minor declines during the session.
Currency markets remained relatively stable, with the EUR/USD pair showing little change. The US Dollar Index Futures saw a slight increase of 0.12%.
