Genus Shares Tumble as Full-Year Revenue Misses Expectations

Shares of Genus PLC (LON:GNS) plunged on Monday after the animal genetics company announced full-year revenue that fell short of analyst forecasts. The market reaction highlights investor concern over top-line performance, despite the firm reporting a significant increase in profitability.
Revenue Miss Overshadows Profit Growth
For the fiscal year, Genus reported adjusted revenue of £658.1 million, a 2% decrease from the prior year. According to the company's report, this figure missed the analyst consensus estimate of £668.28 million. Genus attributed the revenue decline primarily to the deconsolidation of its Chinese porcine genetics unit, PIC China, following its transfer into a new joint venture.
In contrast to the revenue miss, the company delivered strong bottom-line results:
- Adjusted operating profit, including joint ventures, grew by 25%. This was driven by robust performance in its PIC division and a £5.6 million milestone payment.
- Adjusted profit before tax (PBT) saw a 35% increase.
Outlook and Market Headwinds
AdLooking ahead to fiscal 2027, Genus stated its outlook remains in line with current market expectations. The company anticipates its group adjusted PBT in constant currency will be moderately higher than the normalized fiscal 2026 result of £90.3 million, projecting resilient underlying profit growth.
However, Genus warned that its fiscal 2027 adjusted PBT is expected to be weighted toward the second half of the year. The company cited several first-half challenges, including disease-related issues in North American pork production, low pork prices in Brazil, and subdued global dairy prices.
Market Reaction
Investors responded negatively to the top-line miss and near-term headwinds, sending shares in Genus down 8.2% in Monday's trading. The sharp decline suggests that the revenue shortfall outweighed the positive news of strong profit growth and a stable full-year forecast.
