French Stocks Fall to 3-Month Low as Luxury Giants LVMH, Hermes Tumble

French equities closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark CAC 40 index falling 0.34% to establish a new three-month low. The decline was primarily driven by a sharp sell-off in the luxury goods sector, alongside broader weakness in healthcare and financial stocks.
Market Close in Detail
At the close of trading in Paris, the broader SBF 120 index also declined by 0.31%. Market sentiment was decidedly negative, with falling stocks outnumbering advancing ones on the Paris Stock Exchange by a margin of 316 to 148, while 80 stocks finished the session unchanged.
A key indicator of investor sentiment, the CAC 40 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of the index's options, was unchanged at 18.96. However, this level represents a new 52-week high, signaling heightened market uncertainty among traders.
Luxury Sector Leads Declines
The consumer goods sector, particularly blue-chip luxury brands, bore the brunt of the selling pressure. Several of the index's largest components registered significant losses and hit multi-year lows, weighing heavily on the overall market.
Ad- Hermes International SCA (HRMS) fell 2.76% to a three-year low.
- LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (LVMH) declined 2.64%, hitting a five-year low.
- EssilorLuxottica SA (ESLX) dropped 2.23%, also reaching a three-year low.
Bright Spots and Broader Markets
Despite the overall market downturn, some companies posted strong gains. Defense and technology firm Thales (TCFP) was the top performer on the CAC 40, rising 4.12%. Other notable gainers included Eurofins Scientific SE (EUFI), which added 1.83%, and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield SE (URW), up 1.54%.
In the wider commodities market, energy prices advanced, with the October WTI crude oil contract rising 3.69% to $105.13 a barrel. Meanwhile, the U.S. Dollar Index Futures, a measure of the dollar's strength against a basket of currencies, gained 0.27%.
