French Stocks Close Flat as Tech Sell-Off Offsets Consumer Gains

Summary
France's CAC 40 index finished Thursday's session nearly unchanged, down just 0.05%, as a sharp decline in technology stocks like STMicroelectronics was balanced by strong performance from consumer brands including Publicis and Pernod Ricard.
French stock markets ended Thursday's session nearly flat, with the benchmark CAC 40 index closing down a marginal 0.05%. The slight decline masked significant divergence between sectors, as a sharp sell-off in technology shares offset gains in consumer and advertising companies.
A Market of Contrasts
The Paris Bourse saw a subdued end to the day, with both the CAC 40 and the broader SBF 120 index shedding 0.05%. Market breadth indicated a slightly negative bias, as declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Paris Stock Exchange by a margin of 246 to 212, with 99 stocks finishing unchanged.
The session's performance was primarily driven by losses in the Technology, Oil & Gas, and Utilities sectors, which weighed on the broader market averages.
Tech Stocks Tumble, Consumer Brands Rally
The technology sector was the primary source of downward pressure on the market. The semiconductor industry, in particular, faced a difficult session.
Ad- The worst performers on the SBF 120 included Soitec SA, which plunged 7.64%, and X Fab Silicon Foundries, which dropped 6.65%.
- Within the CAC 40, chipmaker STMicroelectronics NV was the biggest laggard, falling 4.91%.
In contrast, several consumer-focused companies posted strong gains, preventing a steeper market decline. Top performers on the CAC 40 included advertising giant Publicis Groupe SA, which rose 3.07%, and spirits maker Pernod Ricard SA, which added 3.03%. Tire manufacturer Michelin also gained 1.82%, reaching a new 52-week high.
Volatility Gauge Holds at 52-Week High
Despite the headline index's lack of movement, a key indicator of investor sentiment suggests underlying caution. The CAC 40 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of the index's options, was unchanged at 18.96, holding at a 52-week high.
This elevated volatility reading indicates that while the market was flat on the day, traders are pricing in a higher potential for significant price swings in the near future. Elsewhere, commodity markets saw Gold Futures decline while crude oil prices posted a modest drop.
