Background

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) announced Thursday it will invest $1 billion to construct a new paint shop at its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville. The project, with groundbreaking expected by late this year, is a significant capital expenditure aimed at modernizing the automaker's largest and highest-revenue manufacturing operation.

Modernizing a Key Facility

The investment will replace the plant's existing paint shop with a facility featuring upgraded technology. According to Ford, the new shop is designed to deliver improved paint quality with greater efficiency and environmental sustainability. The Kentucky Truck Plant is a cornerstone of Ford's North American production, assembling a vehicle every 45 seconds.

The facility is responsible for producing some of Ford's most profitable models, including:

  • F-Series Super Duty pickups
  • Ford Expedition SUVs
  • Lincoln Navigator SUVs

This latest announcement is part of a wider, approximately $4 billion investment push by Ford into its Kentucky operations. The company stated this project is anticipated to create or secure around 2,200 jobs.

Other recent capital commitments in the state include roughly $2 billion to transform the Louisville Assembly Plant into a manufacturing hub for Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, which will produce the Ford Fathom midsize electric pickup expected in 2027. An additional $2 billion is allocated to Ford Energy Systems in Glendale for battery energy storage production, which is slated to begin in late 2027.

Commitment to US Manufacturing

Ford, which is Kentucky's largest auto manufacturer and has operated in the state since 1913, employs more than 11,500 workers. The investment underscores the company's strategy of modernizing its profitable internal combustion engine vehicle lines while simultaneously funding its transition to electric vehicles.

"These investments demonstrate our confidence in Kentucky’s workforce, our commitment to American manufacturing, and our belief that the future of mobility and energy will be built right here in the United States," said Jim Farley, Ford President and CEO, in the announcement.
