Florida Sues Pfizer, CEO Over COVID-19 Vaccine Safety and Efficacy Claims

Summary
Florida's attorney general has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer and CEO Albert Bourla, alleging the drugmaker misled consumers about its COVID-19 vaccine's safety, effectiveness, and pricing.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer Inc. and its CEO, Albert Bourla, alleging the pharmaceutical company misled the public about the safety and effectiveness of its COVID-19 vaccine. The complaint, filed in a state court on Thursday, accuses the drugmaker of violating Florida's consumer protection law.
Details of the Lawsuit
The lawsuit alleges that Pfizer misrepresented its vaccine's benefits while failing to disclose potential risks and adverse events, including heart inflammation. According to the filing, the company also claimed its vaccine would help protect others by stopping virus transmission, an outcome it had not tested for.
Florida also accuses Pfizer of using unfair tactics to dominate the market. The complaint highlights that after earning more than $80 billion from vaccine sales, the company increased the price per dose from approximately $30 to a range of $110 to $130 in 2023.
Financial and Legal Ramifications
The state is seeking a court order to halt the alleged conduct and is pursuing significant financial penalties. The requested relief includes:
Ad- Fines of $10,000 per violation.
- Increased fines of $15,000 per violation when seniors or disabled individuals were harmed.
- The return of profits obtained through the alleged misconduct.
For Pfizer, the lawsuit represents a significant legal and reputational challenge. A negative outcome could result in substantial financial liabilities and increased scrutiny of its marketing and pricing practices.
Pfizer's Response
In a statement cited by Reuters, Pfizer said the state’s allegations have no merit. The company stated that its representations about the vaccine "have been accurate and science-based," and that it "stands behind the safety and efficacy of its vaccine."
Pfizer confirmed it would respond to the suit in due course. When asked by Reuters for additional details, the Florida Attorney General’s Office said the complaint and the attorney general's comments "speak for themselves."
