Background

Shares of Ferguson Enterprises Inc. (NYSE:FERG) surged 8% in after-hours trading Friday after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the company will be added to the benchmark S&P 500 index.

Details of the Index Change

Ferguson is set to replace video game company Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) in the S&P 500, with the change becoming effective prior to the start of trading on Wednesday, August 5, S&P Dow Jones Indices confirmed in a statement.

The replacement comes as Electronic Arts is being acquired by an investor consortium that includes Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. The deal is expected to be completed soon, pending final conditions, which will make EA ineligible for continued inclusion in the index.

Market Impact

Inclusion in the S&P 500 is a significant event for a company, as it typically triggers substantial buying activity. Passive investment vehicles, such as index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the S&P 500, must purchase shares of the newly added company to accurately reflect the index's composition. This forced buying pressure often leads to a short-term rally in the stock price, as seen with Ferguson's after-hours performance.

Other Index Rebalancing

In a separate announcement, S&P Dow Jones Indices also detailed changes to its S&P SmallCap 600 index.

  • ADI Global Distribution Inc. (NYSE:ADIG) will be added to the S&P SmallCap 600 effective August 4, following its spin-off from Resideo Technologies Inc. (NYSE:REZI).
  • ADI will replace Hertz Global Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:HTZ), which S&P Dow Jones Indices stated is "no longer representative of the small-cap market space."
