F5 Stock Rises on Q4 Earnings Beat and $1.5 Billion Buyback Plan

Shares of F5 (FFIV) rose in after-hours trading on Tuesday after the application security and delivery company reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings and revenue that surpassed analyst expectations. The company also announced a significant new share buyback authorization, signaling management's confidence in future cash flow.
Strong Q4 Results and Shareholder Returns
F5 reported total revenue of $917 million for the quarter, a 13% increase year-over-year. The growth was driven by a strong performance in its product division, which saw revenue climb to $510 million. Key drivers within product revenue included:
- Systems revenue growth of 29%
- Software revenue growth of 19%
Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $4.42, beating the consensus analyst estimate by 3.9%. In a move underscoring its financial strength, F5's board authorized an additional $1.5 billion for share repurchases. This is incremental to the $322 million remaining under the company's existing buyback program.
Margin Pressure Tempers Gains
AdDespite the strong top-line results, the stock's after-hours gain was modest as investors weighed signs of margin compression. The company's operating margin contracted to 23.1% from 25.4% in the same period a year earlier.
Investors noted that while revenue grew, operating income saw only modest year-over-year growth amid rising expenses in sales, marketing, and R&D. According to the report, GAAP net income also declined for the quarter, and free cash flow margin fell sharply from the previous quarter, tempering initial enthusiasm.
Outlook and Management Commentary
Looking ahead, F5 issued guidance for its 2027 fiscal year, projecting revenue growth of 8% to 9%. The company expects non-GAAP EPS to be in the range of $18.00 to $18.30.
CEO François Locoh-Donou highlighted the company's performance, noting that F5 has now achieved nine consecutive quarters of double-digit product revenue growth. He attributed the success to F5's expanding strategic role in helping customers manage hybrid multi-cloud environments, navigate a complex threat landscape, and adapt to an AI-driven world.
