European Stocks Flat as Tech Sell-Off and Mideast Tensions Offset Travel Gains

European equities were little changed in early Friday trading, as a rally in travel and mining stocks was offset by a notable decline in the technology sector amid concerns over AI-related valuations and rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.2% to 642.42 by 0714 GMT, according to Reuters data. However, the benchmark remains on track for a weekly loss, which would snap a four-week winning streak for the index.
Sector Divergence
Gains on Friday were concentrated in specific sectors. Mining stocks led the advance with a 2% rise, while the travel and leisure sector gained 1%.
A standout performer was UK airline EasyJet, which saw its shares jump 13.4%. The surge followed news that the company had agreed in principle to a £5.7 billion ($7.65 billion) takeover approach from private equity firm Apollo Global.
Tech Stocks Under Pressure
Weighing on the broader market was a sell-off in technology shares, particularly semiconductor companies. The weakness comes as investors grow cautious about elevated valuations for stocks related to artificial intelligence, with the upcoming U.S. debut of South Korea’s SK Hynix serving as a key sentiment test.
AdKey decliners in the sector included:
- ASML: -2%
- Soitec: -2.8%
- Siltronic: -2%
Geopolitical Headwinds
Broader market sentiment was also dampened by reports of renewed conflict in the Middle East. According to reports from Thursday, Iranian forces attacked U.S. military infrastructure in Gulf states, weakening a three-week-old ceasefire.
This development has injected fresh uncertainty into global markets, causing investors to adopt a more cautious stance and limiting risk appetite at the end of the trading week.
