Background

European shares advanced in early trading Tuesday, as a retreat in oil prices and strength in technology stocks helped lift market sentiment, while investors closely monitored a new wave of corporate earnings. The pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 0.3% to 641.39 points by 0704 GMT, according to Reuters.

Sector Performance and Market Drivers

The technology sector was a top performer, rising 1.4% in morning trade. The rally was led by semiconductor equipment makers ASMI and ASML, which gained 2.5% and 3%, respectively. This move comes as investors await key earnings from U.S. tech giants later this week, which are expected to provide clues on the sustainability of AI-related demand.

Basic resources stocks also climbed 1.4%, tracking an uptick in copper and gold prices. The broad-based gains were supported by a pullback in crude oil from one-month highs, which eased some inflation concerns. According to reports, the move lower in oil was linked to diplomatic mediation efforts between the United States and Iran.

Earnings and Geopolitics in Focus

Despite the positive open, investor focus remained squarely on corporate performance and geopolitical risk. The easing in oil prices came after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis announced a blockade of Saudi Arabia on Monday, highlighting the supply-side risks that continue to weigh on energy markets.

Corporate earnings provided a mixed picture. Shares in Swiss bank Julius Baer fell 2% despite the company reporting stronger-than-expected net new money inflows for the first half. The negative reaction suggests investors are scrutinizing quarterly results closely for signs of pressure from the ongoing regional conflict and the broader economic environment.
