Background

European wholesale natural gas prices retreated on Friday as shipping data confirmed that liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers are successfully navigating the Strait of Hormuz, allaying market fears of an immediate supply cutoff from the Middle East.

Market Reaction

The benchmark front-month Dutch TTF gas contract, a key European price indicator, fell 2.3% to €48.97 per megawatt-hour (MWh). In the United Kingdom, the equivalent front-month contract declined 2.4% to 117.90 pence per therm.

Despite the session's decline, both benchmarks are on track to record their second consecutive week of gains. Prices had spiked by as much as 6% earlier in the week, driven by a significant geopolitical risk premium following an escalation of military hostilities between the U.S. and Iran.

The price drop was directly attributed to real-time satellite tracking and ship-broking data, which showed several loaded LNG carriers from Qatari export terminals passing through the critical maritime chokepoint without disruption in the last 24 hours. While Iran has reportedly increased naval patrols in the waterway, it has not halted merchant traffic, preventing a worst-case scenario that traders had begun to price in.

High Inventories Provide Buffer

Europe's ability to absorb the geopolitical shock is bolstered by its strong natural gas inventory levels. Storage sites across the Eurozone are currently filled well above seasonal averages for this time of year, providing a crucial cushion against short-term supply volatility.

However, market participants remain cautious. Analysts note that a prolonged standoff, any direct impact on LNG infrastructure, or a decision by insurers to withdraw coverage for vessels transiting the Persian Gulf could quickly reverse Friday's price declines and push the benchmark Dutch contract back above the psychological €50/MWh threshold.
