Euronext Wheat Slips as Bearish USDA Corn Data Weighs on Grain Markets

Summary
Paris-based wheat futures erased earlier gains to close lower after a U.S. Department of Agriculture report revealed larger-than-expected corn inventories, creating spillover pressure across the grains complex.
European wheat futures closed slightly lower on Wednesday, reversing earlier gains after a U.S. government report showing surprisingly large domestic corn stockpiles sent a bearish signal through the broader grains market.
USDA Report Triggers Sell-Off
The benchmark December milling wheat contract on the Paris-based Euronext exchange settled down 0.1% at €236 per metric ton. The contract had reached a nearly one-week high of €239.25 earlier in the session before the data was released.
The downturn was triggered by a quarterly stocks report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which estimated U.S. corn inventories above the average of market expectations. The news immediately pressured grain prices, with Chicago corn futures falling nearly 4% and Chicago wheat dropping more than 2%.
Black Sea Tensions Limit Losses
AdDespite the pressure from the U.S. data, ongoing geopolitical risks in the Black Sea region provided a floor for wheat prices, preventing a steeper decline. According to traders, persistent concerns over disruptions to grain trade from Russia and Ukraine due to the war continue to support the market.
Prices had steadied this week as the market absorbed the lack of any new diplomatic breakthroughs to ease shipping and export tensions in the critical grain-producing region.
Monthly Context
The Wednesday session capped a volatile month for the grain. The December Euronext contract registered a 3.8% decline for September, retreating significantly from a contract high of €259.25 reached at the beginning of the month. The contract had been recovering from a six-week low of €231.50 hit just a day earlier on Tuesday.
