Background

Enphase Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:ENPH) shares rose on Tuesday after the company announced a significant upgrade for its European customers, enabling home backup capabilities for previously installed battery systems through a software update.

New Capabilities for European Customers

The upgrade targets homeowners with existing second-generation IQ Battery 3T and IQ Battery 10T systems. These systems previously operated only in grid-tied mode, but can now be configured to provide power during a grid outage with the addition of an IQ System Controller.

The new feature allows single-phase homes to achieve whole-home backup, while three-phase homes can back up a designated phase. The company confirmed the capability is now available in 13 European countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Spain.

Furthermore, the update enables customers to expand their storage capacity by adding newer, third-generation IQ Battery 5P units alongside their current batteries. Sabbas Daniel, senior vice president of sales at Enphase Energy, noted that customers can now "combine batteries from different generations... without abandoning their original investment."

Market Impact and Strategy

Following the announcement, shares of Enphase Energy climbed 2.1% in Tuesday's trading session. The move is strategically important as it allows the company to drive incremental sales of new hardware and features into its existing installed base in Europe.

By offering a path to upgrade rather than replace, Enphase can enhance customer loyalty and capture further revenue from its existing network of over 5.2 million deployed systems worldwide. The company confirmed that all installed batteries remain covered under their existing warranties after the upgrade.
