Eneos Unit to Acquire Additional Stake in Papua New Guinea LNG Project from TotalEnergies

Eneos Xplora, a subsidiary of Japanese energy giant Eneos Holdings (TSE:5020), announced on Tuesday it has agreed to acquire an additional stake in the Papua LNG project in Papua New Guinea from France's TotalEnergies (EPA:TTEF). The move signals a deepening commitment to the major liquefied natural gas development.
The Agreement
Under the terms of the deal, Eneos Xplora will purchase an additional 0.49% interest in the project. The company stated that the transaction's completion is contingent upon a final investment decision (FID) on the project, as well as securing necessary regulatory approvals.
Eneos noted that the acquisition is part of its strategy to strengthen its business base in Papua New Guinea. The company also aims to bolster stable energy supplies for Japan and other key Asian markets, which are major consumers of LNG.
AdProject Significance
The Papua LNG project is a significant energy development designed to commercialize natural gas from the Elk-Antelope field, located in the country's Gulf Province. The facility is engineered with a planned production capacity of 5.6 million metric tons of LNG per year.
The project is a cornerstone of Papua New Guinea's efforts to expand its energy sector and is closely watched by global energy markets. For investors, Eneos's move underscores the continued strategic value placed on long-term LNG supply contracts, particularly those geographically positioned to serve high-demand regions in Asia.
