Embraer and Saab Deepen Partnership with Framework for 20 More Gripen Jets in Brazil

Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer and Swedish defense company Saab have signed an agreement to expand their production partnership, creating a framework to build 20 additional Gripen fighter jets in Brazil. The deal, announced at the Farnborough Airshow, deepens the industrial collaboration between the two firms.

Agreement Expands Brazilian Production

The new framework designates Embraer's Gaviao Peixoto facility as the production site for the additional aircraft. This plant is currently the only location outside of Sweden where the final assembly of the Gripen fighter takes place.

Embraer will manage the aircraft assembly process, which is intended to complement Saab's primary final assembly line in Sweden. According to the companies, they plan to finalize the corresponding production agreement in 2026.

Deepening a Strategic Partnership

This agreement builds upon a previous deal from 2014, in which Brazil purchased 36 Gripen fighters. That contract included a significant technology transfer component and stipulated that 15 of those jets would be assembled at the Gaviao Peixoto site.

By expanding the production line, the companies aim to better position themselves to meet potential increases in global demand. "We are well positioned to support increased production capacity if demand requires it," said Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defense.

What It Means for the Market

For investors, the deal signifies a strengthening of the strategic alliance between the two major defense contractors. It enhances Embraer's role in the global military aerospace supply chain, showcasing its advanced manufacturing capabilities beyond serving only domestic contracts.

For Saab, the expanded Brazilian production hub provides greater manufacturing flexibility and a strategic foothold to compete for defense contracts in Latin America and other international markets.
