Elisa Shares Fall After Q2 Earnings Miss Highlights Mobile Weakness

Summary

Shares in Finnish telecom operator Elisa fell sharply after the company's second-quarter earnings missed analyst expectations and revealed persistent pressure on its core mobile service revenue.

Background

Shares of Elisa dropped 4.3% to €35.44 on Monday after the Finnish telecommunications company reported a slight deterioration in profitability for the second quarter, disappointing investor expectations and raising concerns about ongoing competitive pressures.

Earnings Miss and Revenue Pressure

According to its Half Year 2026 Report, Elisa's net profit for the April-to-June period slipped to €89 million from €90 million in the prior-year period. This resulted in earnings per share of €0.55, down from €0.56 and below market forecasts.

The top-line figures provided little support, with total revenue remaining broadly flat at €551 million. A key metric, telecom service revenue, declined by 0.7% as the company continued to feel the effects of intense mobile pricing competition from the previous year. While fixed-service revenue grew 3% and comparable EBITDA saw a slight increase, these positive points were overshadowed by the headline earnings miss.

Unchanged Outlook and Technical Factors

Elisa's board reiterated its full-year 2026 guidance, forecasting revenue to be at or slightly above 2025 levels and comparable EBITDA in the range of €815–€845 million. The decision to maintain the outlook, rather than raise it, offered no upside catalyst to reassure investors. The quarterly dividend was also held steady at €0.60 per share.

Adding to the downward momentum is a technical factor related to its dividend. The stock is set to trade ex-dividend on July 17, just two days from the report. Stocks typically decline by approximately the value of the dividend payout as they approach the ex-dividend date, which created additional selling pressure.

Market Reaction

The stock's decline pushed it toward the lower end of its 52-week range of €34.57–€47.05. Monday's weakness appeared to be company-specific, as broader European equity markets were stable. The combination of a softer-than-expected earnings report, a continued headwind in the mobile segment, and the approaching ex-dividend date fueled the investor sell-off.
