Eli Lilly Shares Gain After Experimental Obesity Drug Shows 23.3% Weight Loss in Trial

Summary
Eli Lilly reported that its experimental drug combination, EloraTZP, achieved an average weight loss of 23.3% in a Phase 2 trial, outperforming its blockbuster drug tirzepatide and boosting its stock price.
Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) shares climbed after the pharmaceutical firm announced its experimental obesity and type 2 diabetes drug combination delivered an average weight loss of 23.3% in a mid-stage clinical trial. The results for the therapy, EloraTZP, significantly outpaced the efficacy of its blockbuster predecessor, tirzepatide, reinforcing the company's dominant position in the metabolic drug market.
Trial Results Detail Significant Efficacy
The highly positive data comes from a 48-week Phase 2b trial involving 367 participants. According to Eli Lilly, the highest dose of EloraTZP demonstrated superior outcomes compared to tirzepatide alone.
Key findings from the trial include:
- Weight Loss: Participants on the EloraTZP combination lost an average of up to 54.1 pounds (23.3%) of their body weight.
- Tirzepatide Comparison: A 15 mg dose of tirzepatide by itself resulted in a 34.4-pound (14.8%) weight loss in the same trial.
- Blood Sugar Control: The combination therapy also showed greater improvement in blood sugar levels, reducing A1C by up to 2.9% compared to 2.4% for tirzepatide alone.
EloraTZP works by combining eloralintide, an amylin receptor agonist, with tirzepatide, which targets the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. This triple-hormone agonist approach is designed to produce a more potent effect on weight and glucose regulation.
Market Reaction and Competitive Landscape
AdFollowing the announcement, Eli Lilly's stock rose by as much as 2.6% before closing up 0.5%. In contrast, shares of its primary competitor in the obesity market, Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), slipped 0.3% on the news.
For investors, these results are significant as they suggest Eli Lilly has a powerful successor in its pipeline that could extend its leadership in the multi-billion dollar weight-loss drug market. The data indicates a clear strategy to innovate beyond its current successful treatments like tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound and Mounjaro.
Safety Profile and Next Steps
While the drug combination met all primary and secondary endpoints, it was associated with a higher rate of side effects. The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal and were generally mild to moderate. However, treatment discontinuation rates due to side effects for EloraTZP ranged from 10.8% to 27.0%, notably higher than the 2.9% rate for tirzepatide alone.
Eli Lilly presented the findings at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. The company stated it plans to advance EloraTZP to pivotal Phase 3 trials in the fourth quarter of 2026, a key milestone that will further evaluate its long-term safety and efficacy.
