Background

Crypto derivatives exchange Deribit and trading software firm SignalPlus have launched their fifth and largest trading competition, titled "The Island," featuring a prize pool of up to $600,000 USDC. The 35-day event, aimed at retail traders, is structured to drive trading volume and user engagement on the Deribit platform.

Competition Mechanics

The competition runs from July 6, 2026, to August 10, 2026, with registration open until the final day. To participate, users are required to execute trades on Deribit through the SignalPlus interface. Standings will be determined by trading volume in eligible options and futures contracts.

A key aspect of the scoring system is its emphasis on options trading. According to the announcement, options volume will be weighted 1.0, while futures volume will be weighted 0.5, effectively incentivizing higher activity in the options market. The event includes both solo and team-based leaderboards.

New Features and Incentives

This edition introduces several new gamified elements to encourage participation. These include a "Mystery Box" deposit bonus, a weekly Profit and Loss (P&L) leaderboard, and a "Flash Arena" that provides reward multipliers for trading short-dated options.

In addition to the main USDC prize pool, the organizers are offering a range of premium rewards to attract high-volume traders. The prize list includes a Rolex watch, Apple Vision Pro, NVIDIA stock, and a luxury trip to Turkey, alongside trading fee coupons and daily USDC rewards.

Market Context and Commentary

Trading competitions are a common strategy among cryptocurrency exchanges to attract liquidity and onboard active users in a competitive market. The focus on sophisticated products like short-dated options and team-based mechanics suggests an effort to engage a more experienced segment of retail traders.

"The Island brings together everything we want this competition to be: bigger scale, stronger participation loops, and a structure that rewards how active options traders actually engage," said Luuk Strijers, Senior Director from Deribit by Coinbase. Chris Yu, CEO of SignalPlus, added that the event is designed to create "a more immersive experience for sophisticated retail traders."
