Background

Crypto derivatives platform Deribit and trading software firm SignalPlus have launched their largest joint trading competition to date, titled "The Island," with a prize pool valued at up to $600,000 USDC. The 35-day event is designed to attract and reward active retail traders in the crypto options and futures markets.

Competition Structure and Rules

The competition runs from July 6 to August 10, 2026, with registration having opened on June 29. To be eligible, participants must execute trades on the Deribit exchange using the SignalPlus interface. Standings are determined by trading volume, with a clear emphasis on options.

Key details of the event include:

  • Total Prize Pool: Up to $600,000 USDC
  • Competition Period: July 6, 08:00 UTC – August 10, 23:59 UTC
  • Scoring: Rankings are based on notional trading volume. Options trades are weighted 1.0, while futures trades are weighted 0.5.

"The Island brings together everything we want this competition to be: bigger scale, stronger participation loops, and a structure that rewards how active options traders actually engage," said Luuk Strijers, Senior Director from Deribit by Coinbase, in the official announcement.

New Features and Incentives

This fifth edition introduces several new mechanics aimed at increasing engagement. The structure includes solo and team-based leaderboards, daily missions, and incentives for block trades and high-volume "whale" traders. A new "Flash Arena" specifically rewards high-volume trading in short-dated options, which are options with very near-term expiration dates.

Other features include a "Mystery Box" deposit bonus and referral rewards. According to the organizers, the event is designed to create a more dynamic and immersive experience for what Chris Yu, CEO and Co-Founder of SignalPlus, termed "sophisticated retail traders."

Market Context

Trading competitions are a common strategy used by exchanges and trading platforms to boost liquidity, attract new users, and increase engagement from their existing client base. By weighting options volume more heavily, Deribit and SignalPlus are aiming to stimulate activity in the crypto options market, a segment where Deribit holds a dominant market share.

The campaign is operated by DRB Panama Inc. and is not available to residents of certain jurisdictions, including Dubai, UAE. As with all cryptocurrency activities, the organizers note that virtual assets are subject to extreme market volatility and involve a high degree of risk.
