Background

Crypto derivatives platform Deribit and trading software provider SignalPlus have announced the launch of a large-scale trading competition for retail investors, featuring a prize pool of up to $600,000 USDC. The event, titled "The Island," is the fifth and largest such competition organized by the partners, aiming to boost engagement among sophisticated derivatives traders.

Competition Structure and Mechanics

The competition will run for 35 days, from July 6 to August 10, 2026. According to the announcement, participation is open to eligible traders who execute trades on the Deribit platform using SignalPlus software. Standings will be determined by trading volume, with a clear emphasis on options.

Key details of the competition include:

  • Scoring: Options trading volume is weighted at 1.0, while futures volume is weighted at 0.5.
  • Formats: The event includes competitions for both individual traders and teams, alongside daily and weekly reward rounds.
  • New Features: This edition introduces new mechanics such as a "Mystery Box" for deposits, a weekly profit-and-loss leaderboard, and a "Flash Arena" designed to reward high-volume trading in short-dated options.

Such competitions are a common strategy for derivatives platforms to increase trading volume and liquidity, which are critical metrics for exchange health. The focus on short-dated options targets a particularly active and high-risk segment of the market.

Strategic Goals and Executive Commentary

Executives from both companies highlighted the goal of creating a more dynamic experience for skilled traders. "The Island brings together everything we want this competition to be: bigger scale, stronger participation loops, and a structure that rewards how active options traders actually engage," said Luuk Strijers, a Senior Director at Deribit, in a statement.

Chris Yu, CEO and Co-Founder of SignalPlus, added that the competition is designed to be "more dynamic and more rewarding" for the platform's user base of "sophisticated retail traders." The structure, which combines volume-based leaderboards with daily missions and team events, aims to sustain trader activity throughout the 35-day period.

Prize Pool and Incentives

Beyond the headline $600,000 USDC prize pool, the competition offers a range of premium rewards. These include a Rolex watch, an Apple Vision Pro, NVIDIA stock, and luxury travel packages. Early registration incentives are also available to encourage prompt sign-ups.

The event is operated by DRB Panama Inc., Deribit's broker-dealer, and is not open to residents of Dubai, UAE. The organizers note that trading virtual assets involves a high degree of risk and can result in significant losses.
