Debenhams Group H1 Profit Rises 14% as Sales Growth Accelerates

Debenhams Group announced that its business turnaround accelerated in the first half of fiscal 2027, with a significant uptick in second-quarter sales growth and improved profitability. The fashion retailer reaffirmed its full-year financial outlook, signaling confidence in its strategic shift toward a marketplace model.
Accelerating Growth and Profitability
The company reported a 13.9% year-over-year increase in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) to £24 million for the six months ended August 31. This was accompanied by an improvement in reported EBITDA, which swung to a £20 million profit from a £3 million loss in the same period a year earlier.
Key financial highlights for the first half include:
- Group gross merchandise value (GMV) rose 1.8%.
- GMV growth accelerated from 0.5% in the first quarter to 2.9% in the second quarter.
- The Debenhams brand was a standout performer, with its GMV climbing 14.1% in the second quarter.
- Net debt declined to £103 million from £111 million.
CEO Dan Finley noted that the shape of the growth, particularly the acceleration in the second quarter, was more significant than the headline first-half figure, indicating a strengthening business, according to the company's release.
Marketplace Shift and Margin Gains
AdDebenhams Group's strategic pivot to an online marketplace model continued to yield results. Marketplace GMV accounted for 38.9% of the group's total, up from 32.7% a year prior. The company aims for marketplace sales to eventually represent more than 50% of total GMV and has expanded its brand-partner ecosystem to approximately 30,000 labels.
The group also saw significant improvements in operational efficiency. Gross margin improved to 53.9% from 51.9%, while the returns rate fell by about 4% during the period, according to a report by FashionNetwork. Exceptional costs were also drastically reduced, falling 83.5% to just £4 million.
Outlook and Debt Reduction
Looking ahead, Debenhams Group maintained its full-year guidance, expecting GMV growth and an adjusted EBITDA of at least £59 million, which is in line with market consensus. The company also anticipates a return to positive pre-tax profit, free cash flow generation, and negligible net debt by the end of the fiscal year.
Subsequent to the reporting period, the company completed two major transactions that it said materially reduced its debt further: the £90 million sale of its Sheffield distribution hub and the $16 million disposal of the Nasty Gal brand.
