CVS Group Shares Slide After Like-for-Like Sales Miss Corporate Targets

Shares in CVS Group Plc (LSE:CVSG), the UK-based veterinary services provider, declined on Tuesday after the company reported full-year organic sales growth that fell significantly short of its own targets. The disappointing metric overshadowed overall revenue growth, raising investor concerns about the firm's underlying performance.
Trading Update Disappoints
In a pre-scheduled trading update for fiscal year 2026, CVS Group reported that its closely watched like-for-like (LFL) sales grew by 2.1%. This figure is substantially below the company’s stated medium-term target range of 4% to 8% and appeared to be the primary catalyst for the stock's decline.
While total group revenue increased by 5.9% to £712.8 million, the market focused on the weaker organic growth. The company's core UK business, which accounts for the majority of sales, delivered LFL growth of approximately 2%. Its Australian operations showed stronger momentum but were largely driven by acquisitions rather than organic expansion, according to the release.
Market Context and Analyst Caution
AdThe market's negative reaction was amplified by pre-existing caution from analysts. On July 9, Jefferies Financial Group downgraded CVS Group stock to a "Hold" rating and cut its price target to 1,350p from 1,420p, signaling skepticism ahead of the results.
The stock fell as much as 3.6% to trade at 1,255p, touching a session low of 1,215p. The share price remains well below its 52-week high of 1,648p, reflecting persistent investor unease over the company's ability to accelerate its organic growth rate.
What It Means for Investors
The sell-off underscores the market's intense focus on organic growth as the key indicator of a company's health, particularly for businesses that also expand through acquisitions. Investors will be looking for a clear strategy from management on how CVS Group plans to re-accelerate its core business performance to meet the upper end of its own financial targets.
