Culp Stock Surges After Q1 Earnings Beat, Strong Cash Flow

Culp Inc. (NYSE: CULP) shares surged 18.8% in pre-market trading after the fabric manufacturer announced first-quarter fiscal 2027 results that exceeded Wall Street estimates, underpinned by a significant turnaround in cash generation and a stronger balance sheet.
Quarterly Results Top Estimates
For the quarter, Culp reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.47, beating the analyst consensus of $0.44, according to a report released after the close of the prior session. Revenue for the period was $53.97 million, which also came in ahead of the $53.2 million estimate.
Balance Sheet and Segment Strength
The most significant driver of investor enthusiasm appeared to be a dramatic improvement in the company's financial health. Operating cash flow swung to a positive $8.1 million from a cash use of $695,000 in the same period a year earlier. This strong cash generation allowed Culp to reduce its net debt by more than 70% to just $3.1 million.
Performance was led by the company's bedding segment, which saw a notable increase in sales and profitability:
Ad- Bedding segment sales rose 13.2% year-over-year.
- The segment's adjusted gross margin expanded to 13.6% from 10.5% a year prior.
- The upholstery segment's performance was described as holding roughly steady.
Cautious Outlook and Market Reaction
While management provided a deliberately cautious forward outlook, citing ongoing macroeconomic and tariff uncertainties, its guidance was viewed as reassuring by the market. The company projects consistent sequential sales volumes and continued outperformance from its bedding division in the second quarter.
The stock's sharp upward move was driven almost entirely by its fundamental performance, as the broader U.S. equity market provided a neutral backdrop. The combination of a clean earnings beat, robust cash flow, significant debt reduction, and a constructive outlook fueled one of the stock's strongest single-day gains in recent memory.
