Background

Corn futures on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) posted modest gains on Monday as traders positioned themselves ahead of the widely watched Pro Farmer crop tour, which is set to provide new insights into U.S. corn and soybean yields.

Market Awaits Fresh Yield Data

The market's focus is on gathering more precise information on crop conditions, particularly after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reduced its official yield forecasts last week. The Pro Farmer tour offers an independent, on-the-ground assessment that can either confirm or challenge government estimates, making it a key event for grain traders.

As of Monday, CBOT December corn was up 1-3/4 cents, trading at $4.85 per bushel.

Traders are also monitoring global supply dynamics and weather patterns. In Brazil, the harvest of the country's second corn crop is progressing, though it remains behind last year's pace. According to a Monday report from agribusiness consultancy AgRural:

  • The harvest in the center-south region was 85% complete as of last Thursday.
  • This is an increase from 79% the previous week but lags the 94% completion rate seen at the same time last year.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. Midwest, Commodity Weather Group is forecasting continued heavy rainfall throughout the week. The precipitation could impact the final stages of crop development and potentially affect harvest logistics.
