Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) shares rose as much as 5% in after-hours trading Wednesday following the announcement of a landmark 20-year agreement to supply Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) with nuclear power. The deal will facilitate a major expansion of Constellation's Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Maryland.
Details of the Agreement
Under the terms of the 20-year contract, Amazon will receive 690 megawatts (MW) of power from the Calvert Cliffs plant. This includes a planned 190 MW capacity expansion, which is expected to come online between 2030 and 2032.
The companies stated the agreement enables more than $3 billion in infrastructure investment and improvements at the 1,790-megawatt facility. A separate retail supply agreement was also signed to support Amazon's operations in the 13-state PJM wholesale electricity market.
Strategic Implications
AdFor Constellation, the long-term commitment from Amazon provides significant revenue certainty, which the company said will support its effort to relicense the plant for an additional 20 years. It also creates a foundation for developing new clean energy technologies at the site.
"This agreement demonstrates how private investment can strengthen critical energy infrastructure," said Joe Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation. For Amazon, the deal helps secure a stable, carbon-free power source to manage energy costs for its power-intensive facilities throughout the region.
Market Context
The Calvert Cliffs facility, located in Lusby, is Maryland's only nuclear plant and is a critical energy asset for the state. According to Constellation, it produces approximately 80% of Maryland's clean energy and generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million homes.
