Constellation Energy Shares Rally After Securing Nuclear Power Deal with Amazon

Summary
The utility's stock rose after it unveiled a 20-year agreement to supply Amazon with 690 megawatts of carbon-free nuclear energy from its Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland.
Constellation Energy Corp. (NASDAQ: CEG) shares rallied 3.9% in pre-market trading after the company announced a significant, long-term power purchase agreement with Amazon. The news provided a strong company-specific catalyst, reversing a sharp decline from the previous session that was tied to unrelated regulatory news.
The Amazon Agreement
The 20-year deal commits 690 megawatts of nuclear output from Constellation's Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Lusby, Maryland, to the tech giant. According to the company, the agreement supports more than $3 billion in infrastructure investment and includes approximately 190 megawatts of new emissions-free generating capacity, which is expected to come online between 2030 and 2032.
"Amazon’s commitment supports the long-term operation of Calvert Cliffs for generations to come and creates a strong foundation for future investment in both the facility and in advanced nuclear technologies," said CEO Joe Dominguez. For investors, the agreement provides crucial long-term revenue certainty, which underpins the company's plan to seek a 20-year license renewal for the plant, de-risking a key asset.
AdMarket Context and Reversal
The rally on Thursday morning erased much of the loss from Wednesday's session, when the stock had fallen on news that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) placed a five-month hold on a reliability procurement plan from grid operator PJM Interconnection.
Other utility stocks impacted by the FERC news did not see a similar rebound, underscoring that the Amazon deal was the primary driver for Constellation's outperformance. The deal highlights the growing demand from large technology companies for reliable, carbon-free baseload power to support the expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
