Coinbase Stock Surges on SEC Approval for Tokenized Equities, Analyst Upgrades

Summary
Shares of Coinbase (COIN) surged nearly 12% after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission established a new framework for trading tokenized stocks, a move that prompted a series of bullish analyst notes.
Coinbase (COIN) shares surged on Friday, climbing nearly 12% in afternoon trading, driven by a landmark regulatory development from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and a subsequent wave of positive sentiment from Wall Street analysts.
SEC Unveils Tokenized Stock Framework
The primary catalyst for the rally was an SEC order unveiled late Thursday that creates a five-year "Innovation Exemption." According to the order, this establishes the first formal federal pathway for approved blockchain venues to list and trade tokenized versions of publicly traded U.S. stocks. The framework exempts these venues from certain exchange registration requirements and provides relief for liquidity providers.
This development directly supports Coinbase's long-stated ambition to become an "Everything Exchange." The new rules potentially allow the company to expand its offerings beyond spot crypto and derivatives into the tokenized equities market. A complementary no-action letter from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday, which eased requirements for certain software providers, provided an additional regulatory tailwind.
Wall Street Analysts Raise Price Targets
Analyst activity provided significant momentum to the stock's advance. Morgan Stanley initiated coverage on Coinbase with an Equal Weight rating but set a notably bullish price target of $250. The firm's analysis framed Coinbase as a key infrastructure provider for the integration of crypto into the regulated financial system.
AdOther investment banks followed suit, with Goldman Sachs and Needham also raising their price targets into the $200-plus range. These updates helped push the Wall Street consensus average price target to approximately $200. Separately, Coinbase was announced as a founding brokerage partner for X’s new Cashtag Partner Program, a move that could broaden its distribution channels.
Broader Market Context
The rally in Coinbase stock was amplified by a strong performance in the broader cryptocurrency market, with both Bitcoin and Ethereum posting significant gains. This contrasted sharply with the wider U.S. equity markets, where the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were nearly flat, indicating the move in COIN was driven by company- and sector-specific news.
Coinbase shares reached a session high of $196.21 after opening at $178.36. The sharp gain marks one of the stock's strongest single-day performances in recent months, reflecting renewed investor optimism about its regulatory and commercial trajectory.
