CBOT Wheat Futures Climb to Six-Week High on USDA Report Expectations

Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) wheat futures surged to a six-week high on Friday as traders positioned themselves ahead of a key U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) crop report. Market sentiment was lifted by widespread expectations that the report will forecast a reduction in U.S. wheat stockpiles.
Pre-Report Positioning Drives Gains
The most-active CBOT September soft red winter wheat contract was last up 13-1/4 cents at $6.33 per bushel. Other classes of wheat also saw significant gains, according to Investing.com:
- K.C. September hard red winter wheat rose 15-3/4 cents to $6.70 per bushel.
- Minneapolis September spring wheat gained 9-1/2 cents to $6.48-1/2 per bushel.
The primary driver for the rally is the monthly USDA supply and demand data, scheduled for release at 12 p.m. EDT. According to a poll of analysts, the USDA is expected to lower its forecast for 2026-27 U.S. wheat ending stocks to 714 million bushels, a decrease from the 744 million bushels projected in June. Lower ending stocks indicate a tighter supply-demand balance, which is typically bullish for prices.
AdGlobal Supply Concerns Add Support
Beyond the anticipated U.S. data, supply concerns in Europe are also contributing to the price strength. Grain trade association Coceral reduced its soft wheat production forecast for the European Union and Britain by 2%, citing damage from recent heatwaves.
Traders also remain watchful of the geopolitical situation in the Black Sea. Any potential escalation in the Russia-Ukraine war could disrupt shipments from the two major grain-exporting nations, adding a risk premium to global commodity prices.
