Background

Cboe Global Markets (Cboe: CBOE) shares gained over 5% after the exchange operator announced a 25-year extension of its exclusive licensing agreement with S&P Dow Jones Indices. The deal secures Cboe's rights to list its flagship options products on the S&P 500 Index through 2051, providing long-term stability for a core part of its business.

Agreement Secures Flagship Products

The long-term extension solidifies the foundational partnership between the two firms, which began in 1983 with the launch of S&P 500 Index (SPX) options. Cboe will maintain its exclusive rights to offer trading in SPX options, a cornerstone of its derivatives franchise.

Cboe CEO Craig Donohue said the agreement allows the company to "further grow our SPX and VIX franchises" while providing "certainty and continuity for our customers." He added that the deal provides a "significant runway to pursue innovation" to meet evolving investor needs, including potential new products like tokenized options contracts.

Financial Terms and Outlook

Under the new terms, royalty fees will remain unchanged for 2026, with an updated structure taking effect in 2027. Cboe stated that it expects the 2027 royalty fee adjustment to have a "de minimis" impact on its net revenue growth for that year.

The company anticipates this impact will be offset by factors including organic volume growth, pricing optimization, and continued business execution. Cboe also noted that future royalty fee adjustments are expected to be smaller than the 2027 reset and plans to provide more specific 2027 guidance in February.

Market Impact and Trading Volume

Investors reacted positively to the long-term certainty provided by the deal. The SPX options complex is a critical revenue driver for the exchange, having seen significant growth in recent years.

Trading activity in SPX options set a record for the fourth consecutive year in 2025, according to the company. Key volume metrics include:

  • A record annual volume of 970.6 million contracts in 2025.
  • An average daily volume of 3.9 million contracts, a 25% increase over the prior year.
